The Complete Interview Preparation Guide for 2026

Interviews reward preparation more than raw talent. The candidate who does their homework almost always outperforms the candidate who wings it, regardless of underlying skill level. Here's how to prepare systematically.

Research the company deeply

Go beyond the homepage. Read their last two earnings calls or annual reports, their recent press releases, their Glassdoor reviews (look for patterns, not outliers), and their LinkedIn page for recent hires and team growth signals. Know their main product, their biggest competitors, and their stated strategic priorities.

Prepare your STAR stories

For behavioral questions ("Tell me about a time when..."), structure answers using STAR: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Prepare 6–8 strong stories from your career that can flex to answer different question types. Quantify the results wherever possible.

Research your interviewers

LinkedIn every person you're meeting with. Know their background, tenure, and recent work. This helps you ask better questions and connect on common ground — a powerful rapport builder.

Prepare 5 genuine questions

"Do you have any questions for us?" is the most important moment in most interviews. Candidates who ask nothing signal low interest. Prepare five thoughtful questions: two about the role, one about the team, one about success metrics, and one about the interviewer's own experience.

Practice out loud, not just in your head

Most people prepare by thinking through answers. This is 20% as effective as actually saying them out loud. Record yourself answering common questions and watch it back. Your filler words, pacing, and clarity will surprise you.

Send a genuine thank-you note within 24 hours

Not a template — a specific note referencing something from your conversation. It takes 5 minutes and sets you apart from 80% of candidates who don't bother.

Preparation is the one variable entirely in your control. Invest the time and you'll interview with confidence.
